The DELE Exam

The Diplomas in Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) are official qualifications certifying the degree of competence and mastery of Spanish, granted by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain.

The DELE examination provides for all the different variants of the Spanish language. They are all considered as valid to obtain the diploma.

The DELE examinations have been designed following the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) of the Council of Europe, which ensures a practical way of establishing a standard, international and objective measurement of the level that should be reached at each teaching stage, and in evaluating results.

The University of Salamanca collaborates with Instituto Cervantes in designing exam papers and in grading the tests leading to the Diplomas in Spanish.

The levels of the Diplomas in Spanish are integrated into the CEFR: A1, A2, B1,  B2, C1, C2.

The DELE is growing at an increasingly fast pace and has gained great notoriety as a international recognition and it is considered the most prestigious Spanish language certification in the world. One of the most recent examples of this global achievement is the decision by the Lycées Francais in Canada to adopt the DELE exam as a Second Language official certification.

The Cervantes Institute in Calgary has been working on the correlation document aligning the Alberta Program of Studies with the CEFR, the DELE exams and Spanish Reference Level. The Descriptors have been delivered by Carlos Soler Montes.

Curriuclar alignment

Even though passing the exam is not the main goal of the SLA subject, I believe that it offers students a great opportunity for them to pass said exam. The collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes has, with no doubt, richened the Spanish program in our school.  Senator Patrick Burns has begun the validation of our Spanish Bilingual program through the use of the DELE exam at grades 5 and 9.

In November 2010 Senator Patrick Burns has been served as the international pilot school for the newly released English speakers A2 level DELE.

Now a day’s students still attend the exams of A2 and B1 corresponding to their level of Spanish and the orientation that he teacher gives them. The results are being satisfactory so far.

Take time to explore the free online resources for Spanish teachers of all levels. It provides audiovisual samples of the main manifestations and varieties of the Spanish language provided by individuals from diverse linguistic – geographic origins belonging to the entire Hispanic world.
